The smart place to invest Harwich Fort
Home of Harwich, one of the UK’s major ports, Tendring provides the ideal location for businesses of all kinds, particularly those involved in import/export activities.

Tendring

With the UK’s closest port to Holland, Germany, and Scandinavia, supported by good road and rail links Tendring provides an ideal infrastructure for import/export business. London is easily reached via the A120 and A12, and the Midlands via the A14.

When compared to the UK as a whole the economy is biased towards agriculture, construction, tourism, professional business services and health & social care.

However, it also has an active manufacturing base spread across the district with the major industrial areas being Clacton and Harwich. This sector employs around 15% of the working population, mainly in small and medium-sized companies.

Of the large employers, the largest is Woolwich Open Plan, whose workforce has grown from 40 to 650 in the last five years.

The population of Tendring has been growing at twice the national average, and over half of the population in the district is of working age. Wages are approx 13% below the national average making the running of a business in the Tendring district lower than in neighbouring areas.

A comprehensive business support service exists delivering advice to new and small businesses, and linking to Business Link advisors for larger more established companies. The active involvement of the Learning & Skills Council’s initiatives such as Profit from Learning, are also fostered. Promotion of ‘lifelong learning’ to local businesses and their workforce is seen as key to bringing about growth of the district’s economy.

In order to encourage inward investment and business start-ups in the district, Economic Development Services can provide: details of properties currently available, connect business with training providers, research grant availability and even provide low cost start up units for rent.
