Brentwood
Brentwood is situated immediately east of the Greater London metropolitan area, separated by a narrow gap of open land through which passes the M25 orbital motorway. This proximity to London and access to the country’s strategic road network means that Brentwood can rightly claim to be an exceptionally accessible location for business.
Two of the county’s major international gateways, Stansted Airport and the Port of Tilbury, are both less than 30 minutes by road from the centre of Brentwood.
In addition, the City of London is just 30 minutes away by train, with stations at Brentwood, Shenfield and Ingatestone on the Liverpool Street line, and West Horndon on the Fenchurch Street line.
Beneath Brentwood’s image as a commuter town lies a very healthy base of local business enterprise. This is predominantly a service sector town, with a highly qualified workforce – over half in the top five socioeconomic groups, (managers, employers, professionals etc). Service sector employment has grown rapidly since the 1980’s more than matching the decline in manufacturing.
The presence of a number of specialist automotive design and development companies underlines the fact that Brentwood’s largest private sector employer is the Ford Motor Company. Its British headquarters and computer control centre are based in a major complex at Warley. Other household names include British Telecom, Amstrad and TM Retail Group.54
